Due to the ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan, the BCCI has decided to suspend the IPL for one week. When the match between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Delhi Capitals (DC) was called off after 10.1 overs due to a blackout in Dharamsala, it became apparent that something like this could happen soon.
Already, 58 matches have been played, and only 12 matches are left. It will be interesting to see how the BCCI conducts the remainder of the IPL. As of now they have postponed it for one week. And after that if the situation doesn’t get better they will have to find a window in the international calendar to finish the rest of the tournament. However, we all know that the BCCI is a very capable board and has faced many such situations before. They have conducted the IPL in different countries — for example, the 2009 IPL was held in South Africa, which was only the second season of this prestigious league.
When COVID-19 hit in 2020, on 13 March of that year, the BCCI suspended the IPL for an indefinite period, much like they have done now. On 10 August 2020, the Government of India granted permission to host the tournament in the UAE.
The 2021 season was played in two halves. That year, the IPL started on 9 April and was suspended on 4 May due to a rise in COVID-19 cases. On 29 May, the BCCI confirmed that the remainder of the IPL would be played between September and October 2021.
So, once this situation is resolved, we can hope that the remainder of the season will be played.
BCCI released a Statement— “The decision was taken by the IPL Governing Council after due consultation with all key stakeholders following the representations from most of the franchisees, who conveyed the concern and sentiments of their players, and also the views of the broadcaster, sponsors and fans ; while the BCCI reposes full faith in the strength and preparedness of our armed forces, the Board considered it prudent to act in the collective interest of all stakeholders.”
Here’s how the cricketing fraternity reacted:
Wonderful decision by the @BCCI to suspend the IPL indefinitely . Nation always first and a great recognition for all our forces.

It is a wise decision to suspend the #IPL2025 considering the tensions. Nothing is more important than the players and people’s safety #IPLSuspended

Prudent decision. Player welfare and public sentiment comes first. #TataIPL2025

I feel it’s an absolutely fair call with the IPL. A choice more than a forced measure. The sport will always return in pleasant times but for now it’s time for our all – out support to one team alone – Our Defence Forces ! Jai Hind 🇮🇳
