India’s javelin star and double Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra started his 2025 campaign of the Diamond League in Doha on Friday, May 16, at the Suheim Bin Hamad Stadium in Doha, Qatar. The focus was more on the Tokyo Olympics Gold Medallist because he was in action for the first time after being coached by world record holder and multiple Olympic champion Jan Zelezny of the Czechia.
Chopra started well and threw 88.44m in his first attempt. It was his third attempt that brought his career-best throw of 90.23m. As soon as he threw, his hands went up in the air as he realised this could be one of the best throws of his career. He touched the 90m mark for the first time. His previous best was 89.94m, achieved at the Stockholm Diamond League in 2022.
However, the star of the day was Julian Weber. He built momentum with his third, fourth, and fifth throws — 89.06m, 88.05m, and 89.84m, respectively. His sixth throw was exceptional. The German thrower crossed the 90m mark as well. It touched 91.06m.
Another Indian athlete, Kishore Jena, was also in action today. His best throw was 78.60m, earning him the eighth spot in Doha.
