The Blue Tigresses recently welcomed a special guest to their training camp in Bengaluru – Sunil Chhetri, the captain of the senior men’s national team.
As the women’s team continues their preparations for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 qualifiers set to take place next month, Chhetri took time to share some motivating words with the squad. In a gesture of appreciation, the Blue Tigresses presented him with an India jersey signed by all the players.
Under the guidance of head coach Crispin Chettri, the senior women’s national team is currently holding its camp at the Padukone-Dravid Centre for Sports Excellence in Bengaluru. As part of their build-up, the team will also play two FIFA Women’s International Friendlies against Uzbekistan on May 29 and June 3 in the same city.
This isn’t the first time Chhetri has interacted with the women’s side, but he noted a noticeable change during this visit.
“I got a very good feedback from the head coach about them.” – Sunil Chhetri
“It was an amazing experience. There aren’t too many old faces left from the last time I met this team, which just tells you how old I’ve become,” said Chhetri. “There are a lot of youngsters, and I got a very good feedback from the head coach about them.”
He praised the positive atmosphere in the camp and offered his best wishes for their upcoming matches.
“Everyone looked happy and chirpy. They’ve got some good friendlies coming up against Uzbekistan and then the Asian Cup Qualifiers, and I wish them the very best,” he said. “I just want them to be happy, feel comfortable together, and enjoy their training.”
India have been placed in Group B for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 qualifiers. Their campaign begins on June 23 with a match against Mongolia in Chiang Mai, Thailand. They will then face Timor-Leste on June 29, Iraq on July 2, and hosts Thailand on July 5.
