In the 59th match of IPL 2025, Mitchell Owen had a tough start to his IPL journey, getting out for a duck in his debut match. Playing for Punjab Kings (PBKS) against Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Owen was dismissed without scoring on just his second ball.
PBKS chose to bat first in this IPL 2025 clash, but their innings didn’t begin well. When Owen came to the crease, the team was already under pressure at 34/1. Facing young left-arm pacer Kwena Maphaka, Owen tried to hit a back-of-length delivery but got a top edge. RR captain Sanju Samson ran to his right and took an easy catch. Owen’s debut ended with a score of zero as PBKS slipped to 58/3 in the powerplay.
Who is Mitchell Owen?
Mitchell Owen is a young 23-year-old all-rounder from Tasmania, Australia. He was brought into the PBKS squad as a replacement for Glenn Maxwell, who was ruled out due to a finger injury.
Owen came into the spotlight earlier this year in the Big Bash League (BBL), where he played for the Hobart Hurricanes. He hit the fastest century in BBL history, scoring 108 runs off just 42 balls in the final. His powerful innings helped his team win the title.
He also ended the season as the top run-scorer with 452 runs. Australian legend Ricky Ponting praised the knock, stating: “There are not many players in the world who can do that.” Before the IPL, Owen played in the SA20 league and also represented Peshawar Zalmi in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
