The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have reinforced their dedication to environmental responsibility through a strong waste management initiative implemented during their home fixtures in the TATA IPL 2025 season at Eden Gardens.
Sporting events can be powerful platforms to raise environmental awareness and influence behaviour, and KKR’s actions demonstrate how cricket can inspire change and involve communities in eco-conscious efforts.
Across their first five home games, KKR successfully prevented over 35,113 kilograms of waste from reaching landfills. This result came from a comprehensive waste management plan focused on various aspects of sustainability.
The franchise introduced 200 waste segregation bins across Eden Gardens, encouraging fans to dispose of waste correctly. A “Green Team” was also stationed throughout the stadium to help spectators and maintain cleanliness. The campaign included visible anti-litter messages and awareness drives to promote mindful actions among fans.
To ensure smooth execution, waste management training was provided to essential stakeholders such as food vendors and catering staff. The sorting team processed more than 10 types of waste — from food waste, paper, and cardboard to plastic bottles and aluminium foil — which were sent to nearby composting centres and recycling units.

“At KKR, we believe it’s also a powerful platform to promote sustainability.” – Juhi Chawla, Co-Owner of KKR
In total, KKR recycled 27,194 kilograms of waste, composted 4,885 kilograms, upcycled 2,826 kilograms of materials including team flags, and donated 207 kilograms of food. These numbers highlight KKR’s leading role in promoting sustainability this IPL season.
Juhi Chawla, Co-Owner of Kolkata Knight Riders, said, “Cricket has the power to unite and inspire, and at KKR, we believe it’s also a powerful platform to promote sustainability. Through this waste management initiative, we’re taking meaningful steps toward reducing our environmental impact and encouraging our fans to be part of the solution. It’s not just about cheering for our team—it’s about coming together to protect the planet we all share.”
The franchise thanked volunteers, implementation partners, sanitation workers, and fans for making the initiative a success. This programme is part of KKR’s larger mission to create a positive influence beyond cricket.
Earlier in the season, KKR also launched eco-friendly jersey packaging under their ‘Runs to Roots’ campaign. The packaging, made from biodegradable materials, aligns with the team’s sustainability goals.
