Mohun Bagan Face Potential Scheduling Challenge Ahead of Packed Indian Football Season

Mohun Bagan Super Giant may face scheduling challenges next season, as the upcoming Indian football calendar looks increasingly congested. As first reported by RevSportz, the Super Cup—potentially rebranded as the Federation Cup—is likely to be slotted between the Durand Cup and the Indian Super League (ISL) in the 2024–25 season. That plan is now close to being finalised.

The Durand Cup is scheduled to begin on 15th July and conclude on 23rd August, while the Federation Cup (or Super Cup) is expected to run from 1st September to 20th September. This tight scheduling could lead to a major clash for Mohun Bagan if they qualify for the knockout stages of the Super Cup/Federation Cup.

As per reliable sources, the first matchday of the AFC Champions League 2 is set to take place between 16th and 18th September. If Mohun Bagan reach the Super Cup/Federation Cup knockouts, they will face a difficult choice—fielding their strongest squad in both tournaments will be a logistical and physical challenge.

As of now, there’s been no confirmation on whether the governing body will adjust the Super Cup/Federation Cup schedule to accommodate Mohun Bagan (or any other club) in light of their AFC commitments. The federation has only recently circulated the draft calendar to all participating clubs.

Notably, FC Goa—who have also secured qualification for the AFC Champions League 2 qualifiers—could face a similar fixture conflict if they progress to the Super Cup/Federation Cup knockouts.

It is still unclear whether Mohun Bagan will deploy their full-strength squad from the start of the Durand Cup. However, considering the importance of the AFC Champions League and the ISL, head coach Jose Molina may opt to field his best XI in the Super Cup/Federation Cup early on to test the squad’s readiness ahead of a demanding season.
