West Indies suffered a horrible 124-run loss in the first of the three-match ODI series against Ireland in Dublin. After asking Ireland to bat first, they conceded 303/6 in 50 overs and then, while chasing that mammoth total, they crumbled under pressure and got bundled out for just 179 in 34.1 overs.
Both as a skipper and an individual batter, Shai Hope failed. His bowling changes and field placements raised questions, and with the bat, he managed only two off five balls. But, during the post-match presentation, Hope slammed his players, claiming they needed to show more intent and had to make sure to get wickets with the ball. However, he also claimed that hope is there that improvement must be there from the next game onwards.
“We’ll take this blow since they outplayed us.” – Shai Hope
Hope said: “We have got to make sure we get wickets with the new ball and then the batters need to set the tone in the powerplay. Hopefully, we can correct these things in the next game. We needed to show more intent. The guys hit the right lengths and the rest is history. We just need to set the tone from the start. We know the firepower we have with quality players coming in at the back end. This series isn’t over yet… we’ll take this blow since they outplayed us.”
The second game of the series is scheduled to take place on 23 May in Dublin.
