Indian athletics is on a rise, with four athletes having already qualified for the World Athletics Championships 2025 and four others who could still make the cut. India’s presence in athletics, globally, is making a mark.
Among the four who have already qualified is Avinash Sable who bagged a gold medal at the 2023 Asian Games, he also holds the Games record of 8:19.50. His recent performance included a fourth place finish at the Shanghai Diamond League this year. And in the second competitive race of the year, Sable clocked 8:23.85s.
On the other hand, Parul Chaudhary too comfortably surpassed the qualifying standard for the 2025 World Athletics Championships. She started off her competitive season with a new national record of 9:13.39 in the women’s 3000 steeplechase race at the Doha Diamond League.
India’s athletics superstar Neeraj Chopra too comfortably qualified for the World Athletics at the Doha Diamond League 2025, with a breach of the 90m mark. Neeraj, in his third attempt, threw 90.23m in Doha that saw him qualify for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
The fourth Indian athlete to have qualified is Triple Jumper Praveen Chithravel who equalled his own National Record during the Federation Cup in Kochi. He recorded a jump of 17.37, with which he secured his qualification for both the Asian Athletics Championships and the World Athletics Championships.
Apart from the four athletes that have already made it to the marquee event, Mohammad Afzal, Annu Rani and Animesh Kujur can still make it, with the cut off date set in August.
In an exclusive conversation with RevSportz, World Athletics Vice President and Athletics Federation of India President, Adille Sumariwalla commented on how well Indian athletes have been performing on the global stage and the impact it will have back home.
“The performances of our athletes are hugely encouraging. While Neeraj continues to scale new peaks, Parul breaking the national record in Doha is excellent. Gulveer did well and Afsal also did extremely well last week. It is no longer about one athlete doing well. It is about all round progress. Multiple events. Across men and women. Senior and junior athletes are all doing well. Sprinters too have broken new ground. This could well be India’s decade in athletics with the Asian Games next year,” Said the VP of World Athletics.
