Australia’s flamboyant all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has officially retired from One Day Internationals, ending a decorated 13-year journey in the format.
Maxwell’s decision was made well before the finger injury that ruled him out of the 2025 IPL season, but he announced it on Monday, June 2.
The spin bowling all-rounder, still managing the lingering effects of a serious leg injury sustained in 2022, informed national selector George Bailey during the Champions Trophy earlier this year that he didn’t see himself featuring in the 2027 ODI World Cup.
“I told him straight away, ‘I don’t think I’ll make it that far’,” Maxwell revealed on The Final Word podcast. “I think now is the right time to start planning for someone else to take over that role and build towards 2027. Hopefully, they get enough of a run-up to really make it their own.”
Debuting in 2012, Maxwell played 149 ODIs, amassing 3,990 runs and claiming 77 wickets with his off-spin. He played key roles in Australia’s World Cup triumphs in 2015 and 2023.
Renowned for his explosive style, Maxwell scored at an average of 33.81 and a staggering strike rate of 126.70 — the highest in ODI history for players with at least 2000 runs. His unforgettable 201* against Afghanistan during the 2023 World Cup at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai is widely hailed as one of the greatest innings in the format’s history.
Though his ODI chapter has closed, Maxwell remains an important asset in Australia’s T20I squad and will aim for another T20 World Cup crown next year, having lifted the trophy in 2021.
