Rob Walter, formerly the head coach of South Africa’s white-ball teams, has been named New Zealand’s new head coach across all formats. He will lead the Black Caps until the conclusion of the T20 World Cup in November 2028.
Walter stepped down from his role with South Africa despite having over two years remaining on his contract with Cricket South Africa. His departure made way for Shukri Conrad to take full charge of the national side. Walter was widely regarded as a strong contender for the New Zealand role due to his proven international and domestic track record.
During his stint with South Africa, Walter guided the team to the semi-finals of the 2023 ODI World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy, as well as the final of the 2024 T20 World Cup. His coaching experience includes time in New Zealand’s domestic circuit and a stint as assistant coach for the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) in the IPL.
Walter excited to coach Black Caps
Speaking on his appointment, Walter said: “The Black Caps have consistently been one of the top-performing teams globally, and I feel honoured to be given the opportunity to contribute to their legacy. Working with such a talented squad and staff during a packed period of global tournaments and high-stakes bilateral series is incredibly exciting. I’m looking forward to getting started.”
New Zealand Cricket (NZC) CEO Scott Weenink said the decision to appoint Walter was based on his experience and recent success.
“Rob is an exceptional coach with a strong background in both domestic and international cricket,” Weenink said.
“His accomplishments in New Zealand’s domestic setup and his recent results with South Africa position him perfectly to guide the Black Caps into their next phase.”
Walter will officially assume his duties in mid-June, ahead of New Zealand’s tour of Zimbabwe in July.
It is believed that Walter secured the position ahead of former New Zealand pacer and ex-bowling coach Shane Bond, with both candidates undergoing a thorough selection process by NZC’s interview panel.
