Rohit Sharma has finally spoken about his decision to take retirement from the Test format in May. The cricketer, who was recently seen in action for the Mumbai Indians (MI) in IPL 2025, recently attended the book launch of Cheteshwar Pujara’s wife, Puja Pujara, named “The Diary of a Cricketer’s Wife” in Mumbai.

During his interaction there, the former Team India captain spoke about how his Test retirement decision made his father disappointed. The 38-year-old’s father is a big lover of the Test format and is unlikely in favour of the new-age cricket.

“My father worked in a transport company. Like I said, what my mom did, my father was very much involved in sacrificing things so that we could have our life. But my father always, since day one, has been a fan of Test cricket. He doesn’t like this new-age cricket. I still remember that day I scored 264 in the ODI. He was like, okay, well played. Well done. There was no excitement from him. It’s important to go out there and all that,” Rohit said.

“But even if I used to get good 30s or 40s or 50s or 60s in Test cricket, he used to talk to me about it in detail. So that’s the kind of love he had for the game. And he’s obviously seen you go up the ranks,” he added.

Rohit Sharma played 67 Tests for India

After playing in 67 matches with a score of 4301 runs at an average of 40.57, Rohit Sharma called off his career in Test cricket with 12 centuries and 18 fifties. Under his captaincy, India qualified for the 2023 World Test Championship (WTC) final, but they lost against Australia.

It was days before the announcement of the Team India squad for the England tour that Rohit Sharma announced his retirement in May 2025. It was via an Instagram story where he wrote — “Hello everyone, I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It’s been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support for all these years. I will continue to represent India in ODIs.”
