The ongoing French Open saw the defending champion, Iga Swiatek, losing the semi-final clash 6-7(1), 6-4, 0-6 against Aryna Sabalenka. But, after the match, Swiatek accused the chair umpire, Kader Nouni, of favouring Sabalenka.
She claimed that the umpire ignored her request to come down and inspect the mark for a first serve that, according to her, landed out. But the umpire refused her plea. On the other side, the umpire was active and came down to check every call that Aryna did.
“I don’t think that was fair” – Iga Swiatek
Swiatek was seen having a heated and animated exchange with the umpire, and talking about it during the post-match press conference, she said: “He was coming down to check every mark when Aryna wanted to, even when the outs were like that. And when I had a mark that was out, he was convincing me that I only came there because I saw my return was out and I framed the return.”
“I didn’t really look at the ball; I just went to check the mark, and I saw the mark was out. I wanted him to come down, but he didn’t. So I don’t think that was fair, especially when he came down every time Aryna asked him to. I don’t get it, but I don’t really care,” she further added.
With this win, Swiatek’s 26-match unbeaten streak in the French Open came to an end.
