South African fast bowler Dane Paterson is confident his side won’t be entering the World Test Championship (WTC) final as underdogs, and believes they have what it takes to defeat Australia at Lord’s and claim the sport’s most prestigious prize in Test cricket.

Despite Australia’s impressive record at the historic venue—just two losses in nearly a century and recent Ashes victories including a 43-run win in 2023—Paterson is optimistic about South Africa’s chances.

From 40 Tests at Lord’s, Australia have won 18, giving them a win percentage of 45—better than England’s 40.68% from 145 matches and South Africa’s 33.33% from 15 games.

“We don’t see ourselves as underdogs,” Paterson told SportsBoom.co.za. “Both teams are stepping into somewhat unfamiliar conditions—the slope at Lord’s, the Dukes ball—it’s all a different challenge compared to what we’re used to with the Kookaburra.”

This will be South Africa’s first appearance in a WTC final, and their fourth attempt in recent years to win an ICC trophy, having previously reached the knockout stages in limited-overs tournaments without lifting the silverware.

“I don’t think we’re second best by any means. We absolutely believe in our ability to win,” Paterson added. “Every South African team carries that hunger and determination. This is our chance to bring home the Mace—the pinnacle of Test cricket. We’re doing this for our country, and that gives us tremendous motivation.”

Although their warm-up match against Zimbabwe was heavily affected by rain, with only one day of play possible, Paterson said the team looked sharp in the limited time they had. Now, the Proteas will turn their focus to stopping Australia from retaining their WTC crown next week.
