Australian vice-captain Steve Smith has revealed his thoughts on the future as he prepares for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final against South Africa. The Australian stalwart is currently in fine form, having scored four centuries in eight innings since the series against India in Brisbane. He remains a key asset for Australia as they look to defend their WTC title.
Speaking about what lies ahead, Smith highlighted his focus on the upcoming tour of India and the Ashes series.
“I’m definitely not looking that far ahead. I’m kind of taking it day by day. While I’m enjoying it, while I’m batting nicely and feeling like I’m contributing to the team, I’m pretty happy. But that [2027] is a while away,” Smith said, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
Smith Yet to Play Since Champions Trophy
It has been nearly three months since Smith last played a competitive match, his most recent appearance being in the semi-final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 against India.
“I’d normally have a bat lying around the house somewhere and just pick it up and do a bit of shadow batting and stuff. But I made a conscious decision to just let it go for a while. It was good,” he revealed.
“I hadn’t hit a ball since I missed a full toss from Mohammed Shami in the Champions Trophy. Fortunately, everything sort of clicked into place immediately. I feel like I’m moving really well, I feel strong, and I’m just ready to get into it now,” he added.
In the semi-final, Smith scored 73 off 96 balls before being dismissed by Shami. He’ll be aiming for another big score at Lord’s—where he last struck a century in 2023—when Australia face the Proteas in the WTC final.
