Former England and Manchester United captain David Beckham has received the Knighthood, Britain’s highest honorary title, for his contributions to sports and charity. In 2003, Beckham was made an OBE, and in 2014, he was close to receiving a Knighthood. But due to an alleged involvement in a tax avoidance scheme, he was disqualified.

Now, after finally receiving the honour from King Charles, Beckham said: “Growing up in east London with parents and grandparents who were so patriotic and proud to be British, I never could have imagined I would receive such a truly humbling honour. Literally a boyhood dream come true. I’m so lucky to be able to do the work that I do, and I’m grateful to be recognised for work that gives me so much fulfilment. It will take a little while for the news to sink in, but I’m immensely proud, and it’s such an emotional moment for me to share with my family.”

Manchester United celebrate Beckham’s Knighthood

Even Manchester United came up with a post on their social media to congratulate their former skipper. In the post, they wrote: “A Knight of the Realm. Massive congratulations from everyone at United on this special achievement, @DavidBeckham — you truly deserve this.”

In that post, United shared a picture of a special jersey featuring Beckham’s iconic number 7, now with “Sir David” printed on it to celebrate his knighthood.

Beckham was part of United’s treble-winning season in 1999. During his stint with the Red Devils, he won six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, two Charity Shields, the Intercontinental Cup, and the Champions League.
