South Africa ended their 27-year-long wait for a Senior Men’s ICC trophy in great style, defeating Australia by five wickets in the ICC World Test Championship Final at Lord’s. While Aiden Markram’s majestic century took the spotlight, the knocks of David Bedingham and Kyle Verreynne also played a crucial role in securing the win.
David Bedingham, who scored an unbeaten 21 runs in the second innings during the chase, summed up his feelings after the win, saying: “Amazing. Very nervous, but the way Aiden and Temba went about made us calm. Thank goodness we got over the line. The sun plays a massive factor, we got luckier of the conditions. It’s been 27 years and I am so thankful we got over the line.”
“When I walked in the middle, I was the most nervous I have ever been.” – Kyle Verreynne
Bedingham’s mindset for building a partnership steadied the game when wickets tumbled early on the first day. His composure in the first innings helped his team reach a fighting total of 138 runs.
Kyle Verreynne also contributed both as a batter and as a wicketkeeper. He stayed calm under pressure and shared how nervous he was before coming out to bat: “I am just relieved. I was watching in the morning and kept thinking I don’t want to bat, I don’t want to bat. When I walked in the middle, I was the most nervous I have ever been. [Win] Means a lot. You can listen to the whole ground singing. Probably getting a little emotion now. It’s incredible.”
