Australia failed to defend their World Test Championship title from 2023, as South Africa defeated them by five wickets at Lord’s on 14 June to lift the WTC 2025 crown. Despite dominating the opening two days, the Aussies lost grip of the game as South Africa made a remarkable comeback.

After the loss, Australian skipper Pat Cummins admitted that his team was outplayed in the fourth innings. He pointed out that the South African batters took charge when it mattered most, while his own bowling unit lacked impact during the chase. Cummins praised Nathan Lyon for his efforts and highlighted the match-winning partnership between Aiden Markram and Temba Bavuma.

“Things can change quickly, but it was a bridge too far. Few things we didn’t do right. Didn’t bat out the opposition after a decent first-innings lead. SA didn’t give us a chance in the fourth innings. There are concerns in the top-seven, guys have performed well in the last two years. Bowlers did well in the first two days. We gave everything a chance, Lyon bowled particularly well but didn’t get a wicket. Aiden and Temba didn’t give us a chance,” Cummins said.

“SA are deserved winners” – Cummins

Despite the heartbreak, Cummins showed grace in defeat and congratulated the Proteas for their performance, calling them worthy champions.

“SA showed why they’re here and are deserved winners, they kept themselves in the game throughout. It’s the pinnancle, I love Test cricket. Huge achievement to make the final, one-game shootout is a spectacle, didn’t end up on the right side but it’s been a great week,” he added.

Cummins had a decent individual performance, picking up seven wickets in the match, including a six-wicket haul in the first innings. However, his contribution with the bat was limited.
