Legendary South Korean coach Kisik Lee is all set to become the Head Coach of the Indian National Recurve Team, with an eye on the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. The 67-year-old, known for shaping champions, is expected to arrive in India by early August. He will be based in New Delhi and the Northern Regional Centre in Sonepat.
His responsibilities will include working with recurve athletes at both the senior and junior levels in India. World Archery quoted Lee as saying, “My job is to train the athletes and the coaches – and the archers show good results in the process.”
Lee began his coaching career as the head coach of the South Korean archery team. He later joined the Australian Institute of Sport as a head coach, where his guidance helped Simon Fairweather win gold at the Sydney 2000 Olympics and Tim Cuddihy secure a bronze medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics. In 2006, he took over as the head coach of the USA Olympic archery training program.
During his tenure with the USA team (2006–2024), his archers won over 300 medals. His coaching instincts played a crucial role in shaping Brady Ellison into one of the most decorated archers, with five Olympic medals and numerous World Cup and World Championship titles.
“All his demands have been accepted. A free hand will be given to him so that Kisik Lee can put his plan into action.” said the Indian national archery federation‘s treasurer Joris Paulose Ummacheril.
The legendary coach will replace his compatriot Baek Woong Ki, who stepped down from the Indian Recurve team due to accreditation issues ahead of the Paris Olympics. The arrival of such a decorated coach is expected to take Indian Recurve archery to new heights.
As part of a possible coaching overhaul, former Olympian and 2010 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Rahul Banerjee, who is also Deepika Kumari’s personal coach, might replace Poornima Mahato as the women’s recurve coach.
