Gargi Raut at Headingley
India’s first practice session at the Headingley cricket ground began at 9:30 (BST) in the morning. Starting off with a team huddle, warm-up drills and light fielding drills, the practice session took an interesting turn after the nets session began.
Two net sessions ran simultaneously, with the Indian bowlers batting against local bowlers in one of the net sessions. But the real action unfolded in what looked like the ‘main’ net session. Yashavi Jaiswal and KL Rahul were the first ones in. With two nets next to each other, the batter would take throw downs, then head into the nets where Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Siraj, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Shardul Thakur were bowling.
Building up to the series, the biggest question remains — who will be India’s No. 4? Who will fill in the shoes of Virat Kohli? And the nets session dropped a hint.

After Jaiswal and Rahul, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant walked in. Many speculated that Gill could bat at No. 4 with Sai Sudharsan at No. 3, the nets session presented a different picture.
Did the practice session give a clue about India’s top four in the first Test – Jaiswal, Rahul Gill and Pant, in that order?
As the four batters sweated it out at the nets, Gauatam Gambhir and Morne Morkle watched the session closely. The practice sessions on Wednesday and Thursday are of great importance with regards to deciding the playing XI for the Leeds Test starting on June 20.
