Legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar has shared heartfelt memories of his special connection with England — a country that played a defining role in his journey to greatness.

In 1992, Tendulkar made history when he joined Yorkshire County Cricket Club as their first-ever overseas player at just 19 years old. But his connection with England began even earlier, when he scored his maiden international century — an unbeaten 119 — at Old Trafford, Manchester in 1990, a knock that saved the Test for India and signalled the arrival of a prodigious talent on the world stage.

Over the course of his career, Tendulkar would go on to score four Test centuries and three ODI tons in England, a country he has always enjoyed batting in. But his association with England runs deeper than just cricketing milestones.

“Not many people know this, but my very first flight was to England in 1988 as part of the Star Cricket Club tour,” Tendulkar told RevSportz. “Later, my first international hundred came at Old Trafford — a match-saving effort that kept the series alive. Then came my stint with Yorkshire, as the club’s first non-English player. And funnily enough, my mother-in-law is English too, so there’s even a family link!”

Tendulkar is currently in England for the launch of the newly minted Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy, which will now be awarded to the winners of Test series between India and England — marking the first-ever trophy named in his honour.
