KL Rahul played a composed knock of 42 as he, along with Yashasvi Jaiswal, provided India with a strong start in the first innings of the opening Test at Leeds.

After winning the toss, England captain Ben Stokes opted to bowl first. Indian openers Rahul and Jaiswal walked out to begin the innings and looked solid at the crease. England failed to trouble the Indian batters for most of the session, until the final few minutes before lunch, when they managed to pick up two wickets in consecutive overs.

Rahul began a bit slower than Jaiswal but soon caught up. He was particularly impressive with his copybook cover drives. The duo stitched together a 91-run partnership in 24.5 overs, giving India an excellent platform.

Rahul scored 42 off 78 deliveries, including eight fours, but was caught at slip by Joe Root while chasing a delivery from Brydon Carse outside the off stump.

KL Rahul showed great form in the practice games

Rahul had shown great form in the practice match leading up to the tour, scoring 116 off 168 balls in the first innings of the second unofficial Test against England Lions, which included 15 fours and a six. He was equally impressive in the second innings, scoring 54 off 64 balls with nine fours.

In the absence of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Rahul’s role has become even more important, given his experience of over 50 Test matches and his two centuries in England. But despite a promising start, he fell just at the stroke of lunch.
