His opening effort outclassed his fiercest rival, Julian Weber of Germany, who managed a best of 87.88m, also on his first attempt, to settle for second place.
Brazil’s Luiz Maurício da Silva secured third place with a personal best throw of 86.62m, setting a new South American record .
Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago finished fourth with a best throw of 81.66m, while Anderson Peters of Grenada, expected to be a strong contender against Neeraj Chopra settled for fifth place with a best effort of 80.39m.
Neeraj Chopra began with a massive 88.16m throw in his very first attempt, followed by an 85.10m effort on his second. His next three throws were fouls, raising doubts among fans about whether he could hold on to the lead. On his final attempt, he registered a throw of 82.89m. However, his opening throw proved more than enough to secure the top spot, as no other athlete managed to cross the 88m mark.
