It is not very often that you get to see an Indian batting line-up dominate the opposition attack on Day 1 of a Test match in England. Shubman Gill’s India team did just that after being put into bat by his counterpart, Ben Stokes. India’s total of 359/3 at Headingley on Friday surpassed their previous best of 338/7 on the first day of the Edgbaston Test in 2022.

Jaiswal overcomes cramp to reach his sixth Test hundred
Yashasvi Jaiswal has now scored hundreds in his first Test matches in Australia (161 in Perth), England (191 in Leeds) and West Indies (171 in Dominica). The left-hand batter had cramps during the nervous 90s but he was determined to reach his sixth Test ton, and third against England, and his celebrations after reaching the milestone said it all.

Gill emulates Vijay Hazare and Virat Kohli
Gill made his captaincy debut a memorable one as he reached his fifth Test hundred, and his first in a SENA country. Gill’s unbeaten 127 at Headingley is the third-highest score by an Indian on captaincy debut behind Vijay Hazare’s 164* against England in 1951, and Virat Kohli’s 141 against Australia in 2014.

Disappointing start to Test career for Sai Sudharsan
The talented Sai Sudharsan failed to live up to expectations on his Test debut. He became the first Indian player to be dismissed for a duck on debut while batting at No. 3 in Tests. The disappointment was clearly evident on his face as he trudged towards the dressing room on the stroke of lunch.

A mature knock from Rishabh Pant
An extravagant straight drive from Rishabh Pant against the second ball he faced from Ben Stokes raised eyebrows. But the new vice-captain of India’s Test team showed tremendous maturity as he remained unbeaten on 65 from 102 balls at stumps.

Stokes the best performer with the ball for England
England captain Ben Stokes was easily the best performer among the bowlers. On a day dominated by India’s batters, Stokes’ figures of 13-1-43-2 were a saving grace for England.
