Borussia Dortmund’s new signing, Jobe Bellingham, made an instant impact in the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 as he scored his first goal for the club in a thrilling 4-3 win over South African side Mamelodi Sundowns. Bellingham’s performance earned him the Player of the Match award, helping Dortmund climb to second place in Group F with four points from two games.

Speaking after the match to DAZN, Bellingham admitted it was a challenging encounter and praised the opposition. “It was a tough game and an important win against a really good opposition. They can be proud of themselves, especially given the weather conditions. That’s something new for us, something we need to get used to,” he said. “I’m glad we won, but there’s still a lot to improve — both for me personally and for the team.”

In an interview quoted by ESPN, Bellingham described the surreal feeling of scoring his first goal for Dortmund. “It’s a little bit surreal really. When the ball hits the net, it’s just crazy. Everything happened so slowly, but yeah, I’m really pleased.”

He also praised his teammates and acknowledged the tough playing conditions. “I think the conditions make it so difficult, especially for us being a European team. They [Sundowns] played a fantastic game and are probably used to this kind of weather — but we definitely aren’t. It’s something we’re going to have to adapt to as the tournament goes on,” he explained.

“The lads have really helped me settle in.” – Bellingham

“The lads have really helped me settle in. It’s been a different experience — instead of signing and then having a summer break, I’ve had the chance to meet everyone early, understand how we play, and get used to what the coach expects from us,” Bellingham added.

Borussia Dortmund coach Niko Kovac was full of praise for the 19-year-old, calling him one of the club’s key long-term assets. “He is among those who are the future of this club,” Kovac said, visibly pleased with the youngster’s attitude and maturity on the pitch. Dortmund have reportedly signed him on a five-year deal for €33 million ($37.70 million) from Sunderland.
