Australia kicked off the new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle with a clinical win over the West Indies in Barbados. Josh Hazlewood delivered a fiery spell, claiming a five-wicket haul to help his team secure the victory on Day 3. With this win, Australia lead the series 1–0.
Chasing a target of 310 in the final innings, the West Indies were bowled out for 141 by the Australian attack. Hazlewood stole the show with figures of 5 for 43 in 12 overs. Nathan Lyon was the second-most successful bowler for the visitors, picking up two wickets in two balls.
Other notable contributions came from Australian skipper Pat Cummins, who dismissed Shai Hope, and substitute fielder Marnus Labuschagne, who effected a run-out to remove Alzarri Joseph.
Australia’s middle-order batters had earlier laid the foundation for the win by setting a competitive target. Beau Webster (63 off 120), Travis Head (61 off 95), and Alex Carey (65 off 75) played key roles, leaving the bowlers to finish the job in the latter half.
Hazlewood Claims His 13th Five-Wicket Haul in Tests
Hazlewood’s superb performance dismantled the West Indies batting line-up, dismissing John Campbell, Brandon King, Roston Chase, Keacy Carty, and Jomel Warrican.
“There’s enough in the wicket—up and down from a length. It’s just about hitting that area time and time again and being patient. I’m just enjoying Test cricket at the moment. Good team, good atmosphere. Once we saw West Indies take the second new ball today, we thought things could happen—but not that fast. There are a few cracks on a length from one end; some balls stayed low, leading to a few bowled and LBW dismissals,” Hazlewood said in the post-match interview.
