Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami were knocked out of the ongoing FIFA Club World Cup 2025 after suffering a heavy 4-0 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain in the Round of 16.  Joao Neves scored twice, while an own goal by Tomas Aviles made it 3-0. Just before halftime, Achraf Hakimi added a fourth goal. No more goals were scored after the break, and PSG comfortably advanced to the quarter-finals.

Luis Enrique Praises Team’s Intensity

After the match, PSG head coach Luis Enrique expressed satisfaction with his team’s dominant display. Speaking to PSG TV, he said: “Of course I’m very pleased with my players’ performance. I think we started the match in the best possible way, with the right intensity. I believe the second half was a bit different because the score influenced it. These are very high quality players.”

“In the end, we’re in the quarter-finals and we’re happy. It’ll be either a European club, Bayern Munich, or a Brazilian one, Flamengo. We’ll watch the match. At this stage of the competition, it will be difficult no matter who the opponent is. Now is the time to think about resting, we need to prepare well for the match, but we have the time to do so. We’re very happy,” he concluded.

Joao Neves, who scored a brace in the match, also spoke after the win. “It’s my first time, my first brace! So I’m really happy, even though for me, the most important thing is the victory. We don’t know our next opponent yet, but whether it’s Flamengo or Bayern Munich, it will be a great match. We hope to put in the best performance possible. I think it’s going to be a good game.”

Despite the loss, Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano said he was proud of his team’s effort. He admitted that PSG were simply a class above. As quoted by ESPN, he said: “I’m very proud of my players. Today you could see the difference in class, but football has given us the chance to compete. This is probably the best team in the world with a great coach, but we took them on.”

In the Quarter-finals, PSG will face Germany’s Bayern Munich on 5 July.
