Former England batter Jonathan Trott has heaped praise on India captain Shubman Gill, describing him as a “world-class player” with a promising future after the latter produced another fine century against England — his second in the ongoing five-match series.
On the opening day of the second Test in Birmingham, Gill remained largely untroubled by England’s pace attack and went on to register another commanding hundred on English soil.
Trott highlighted the Indian skipper’s tactical awareness, particularly in how he handled the threat posed by bowlers like Brydon Carse and Chris Woakes. According to Trott, Gill’s ability to develop tailored approaches to different bowlers sets him apart.
“Carse has a bit more pace than Woakes, but what impressed me was how Gill read both of them. He understood Woakes would aim at the stumps and, despite the lack of raw pace, Gill clearly came in with a plan — not one he devised on the spot, but one he had thought through beforehand. That’s the difference between a good player and a world-class one,” Trott said while speaking on JioHotstar.
He further added, “Executing a non-textbook plan with such confidence is impressive. It impacts the team beyond the pitch as well — the players in the dressing room see that. His body language and the manner in which he accumulated his runs were just as telling.”
Gill is set to continue on day two unbeaten on 114, alongside Ravindra Jadeja, who is on 41. India finished day one at 310 for 5, while England will be eager to claim early wickets when play resumes.
