In heartbreaking news, Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota has passed away following a fatal car crash in northern Spain. The tragic incident also claimed the life of his younger brother, André Silva. The crash occurred early in the morning on the A-52 highway near Cernadilla, close to the Portuguese border.
According to reports, Diogo was behind the wheel of a Lamborghini when the vehicle suffered a blown tyre during an overtaking maneuver. The car veered off the road, rolled multiple times, and burst into flames. Emergency services rushed to the scene, but both Jota and Silva were declared dead at the site.
Just two weeks prior, Jota had married long-time partner Rute Cardoso in Porto on 22 June. The couple shared three children.
Jota, 27, joined Liverpool in 2020 from Wolverhampton Wanderers for a reported €44.7 million. He played 182 matches for the Merseyside club, scoring 65 goals and providing 26 assists. Known for his tireless work ethic and clinical finishing, he was a key figure under Jürgen Klopp.
His brother André Silva, 26, was also a professional footballer, representing FC Penafiel in Portugal’s second tier.
