The Gill model of Consistency in International Cricket

Shubman Gill is putting on a batting masterclass in England. He is not only leading the team as its captain, but also setting examples with the bat. Before this tour, many questioned his promotion as Test captain. His record outside Asia was not strong. But in just two matches, Gill has silenced his critics.

He began his Test captaincy journey with a brilliant 147 in the first innings in Leeds. The 25-year-old carried that form into the Edgbaston Test. This time, he went beyond a century. He kept punishing the England bowlers and made history.

Gill became the first Indian captain to score a double century in a Test in England. His marathon knock finally ended on 269 off 387 balls, including 30 fours and three sixes.

Consistent Across All Formats

Since January 2023, Gill has been one of the most consistent batters in world cricket. Across formats, he has scored the most runs in this period. He has scored 2,088 runs in 40 ODIs at an impressive average of 59.65. His tally includes 11 fifties and seven centuries. He also hit his only T20I century during this time. His numbers are remarkable:

  • Runs: 4247 in 98 innings (most by any batter since 2023)
  • Average: 48.26 (minimum 3500 runs, most by any batter since 2023)
  • Centuries: 14 (most by any batter since 2023)
  • 50+ scores: 31 (joint-most with Sri Lanka’s Kusal Mendis)
  • Boundaries: 470 (most by any batter since 2023)

Before this series began, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retired from Test cricket. Their absence left a big gap. Gill stepped up to bat at No. 4 while also taking on captaincy duties. So far, he has handled that pressure with maturity and Gill is showing the world what true consistency looks like.
