Former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen took to social media to remind fans of his earlier support for Shubman Gill, after the Indian captain produced a record-breaking innings in the second Test at Edgbaston.

“Remember my tweet about @ShubmanGill?” Pietersen posted on X, quoting his February 2024 message:

“Kallis averaged 22 in his first 10 Tests and turned out to be arguably the greatest player to play the game. Give @ShubmanGill time to find it please. He’s a serious player!”

At the time of that tweet, Gill was under pressure. During the second Test of the 2024 home series against England, he had managed just 34 runs in the first innings — his 12th consecutive Test innings without a half-century. However, he bounced back strongly in the second innings with a century, beginning his return to form.

Gill’s Heroic 269 Puts India in Control

Fast forward to July 2025, and Shubman Gill has delivered one of the finest Test innings by an Indian batter. On Day 1 at Edgbaston, he came to the crease with India at 95/2. He reached his fifty cautiously, taking 125 balls, and brought up his century off 199 deliveries late on the first day. His composure and technical brilliance were on full display as he went on to score a magnificent 269 from 387 deliveries.

Gill’s knock included 30 fours and 3 sixes and helped India post a mammoth 574/8 in 144 overs — taking firm control of the match. His innings broke multiple records: Highest individual score by an Indian captain in Test cricket, surpassing Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 254 vs South Africa.Highest Test score by an Indian in England, overtaking Rahul Dravid’s 217 at The Oval in 2002. First Indian batter to score 250+ runs in a Test innings outside the subcontinent. He also joined Kohli as only the second Indian captain to score a double century in an away Test.
