The Indian High Commission in London hosted a heartfelt felicitation ceremony on Sunday to honour the Indian women’s cricket team, who are currently touring England for a five-match T20I series. The special event took place at Aldwych in Central London, and was marked by enthusiastic support from the Indian community.
Captain Harmanpreet Kaur led the squad at the event, with the entire team in attendance. They were warmly welcomed by Indian fans and officials alike. Supporters waved the Indian flag, sang the national anthem, and created an atmosphere that was both emotional and memorable for everyone present.
The High Commissioner of India to the UK, Vikram Doraiswami, applauded the team’s growing stature and recent performances. “You are not just athletes; you are role models and ambassadors of a rising India,” he said, encouraging the team ahead of their upcoming matches.
The ceremony also provided fans—especially young supporters—with a rare opportunity to meet and interact with their cricketing heroes. Many expressed excitement and joy at seeing their idols up close. The event served as a major morale boost for the players ahead of the crucial final matches of the tour.
The popularity of the Indian women’s cricket team has grown rapidly in recent years, thanks to the impact of stars like Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Verma, and others. The team now enjoys a significant global fan base, with strong support in both India and England.
India currently lead the series 2-1, but England Women bounced back in the third T20I at The Oval, winning by five runs in a last-ball thriller on Saturday.
The fourth T20I is scheduled to be played at Old Trafford on Wednesday, 9 July, followed by the series finale at Edgbaston on Saturday, 12 July.
