Former Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto is doubtful for the third and final ODI against Sri Lanka after picking up a quad injury in the previous match. The injury forced him to cut short his fielding stint during the second game. While the BCB medical team remains hopeful, they are uncertain about his recovery. Sources suggest that the former ODI captain is eager to regain fitness in time to contribute in the series decider.
“We can only say something about him after the practice session because it is important to see how he reacts in the nets and elsewhere during training ahead of the game,” a source familiar with the situation told Cricbuzz on Monday.
It appears that Naim Sheikh, another top-order batter, will replace Shanto if he is ruled out due to the injury. Naim is making a return to the side after a two-year absence.
During a net session, Shanto appeared uncomfortable—particularly while running—and asked physio Bayzidul Islam to examine his left leg, as he was experiencing some discomfort.
Bangladesh have the opportunity to clinch their first-ever ODI series win in Sri Lanka, with the series currently level. Speaking ahead of the decider, opener Parvez Hossain Emon said:
“This is a big chance for us. If we win the match tomorrow, it will be a great series win. Everyone is feeling confident. After the win in the last match, the confidence has been building among us, so we will try our best to win tomorrow.”
The series-deciding third ODI will be held at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday, 8 July.
