Talismanic English batter Joe Root reached 3000 runs against India in Test cricket. The 34-year-old batter achieved the feat on the opening day of the ongoing Test at the Home of Cricket, Lord’s. Root is now the highest run-scorer in England-India Test encounters. The second place is held by Sachin Tendulkar, who has over 2,500 runs. Root reached the 3,000-run milestone when he took his 45th run of the innings.

Root has been a consistent performer against India in Test cricket. He crossed the 3,000-run mark in just his 33rd Test (60 innings) against them, maintaining an impressive average of over 57.

What sets Root apart is his dominance in the India-England rivalry — he is the only player in the history of these contests to register more than 10 centuries. His tally includes 10 hundreds and 12 fifties.

On Indian soil, Root has scored 1,272 runs at an average of 45.42. Back home in England, he has been even more prolific, accumulating over 1,700 runs against India.

He also completed 2,000 runs at the historic Lord’s Cricket Ground during the same innings.

During the first Test at Headingley, Root etched his name into the record books by surpassing Tendulkar’s tally of 1,575 runs to become the highest run-getter in India-England Tests on English soil. Tendulkar had achieved that total at an average of 54.31.

Root has now passed the mark of 1,700 runs at home against India — second only to Ricky Ponting, who has scored 1,893 runs against India on home soil. Root is also the joint-highest century-maker at home, alongside Ponting and Steve Smith, with seven centuries each.

While it was indeed a record-breaking day for England’s most prolific run-scorer, Root finished the day unbeaten on 99. Captain Ben Stokes remains at the other end on 39*, with England ending the day at 251 for 4.
