The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has issued an update regarding Rishabh Pant’s finger injury, confirming that he will not take up wicketkeeping duties on Day 2 of the ongoing Lord’s Test. Dhruv Jurel will continue behind the stumps as Pant is closely monitored by the medical team.
India’s Test vice-captain sustained a blow to the tip of his left index finger while attempting to stop a wayward delivery from Jasprit Bumrah down the leg side during the 34th over. Although he initially resumed keeping after on-field treatment, Pant soon walked off clutching his finger in pain.
Jurel was called into action promptly and took over wicketkeeping duties. The 24-year-old impressed immediately, taking a sharp reflex catch to dismiss Ollie Pope off Ravindra Jadeja’s bowling in the 50th over — a key breakthrough for India after tea. It was a difficult catch as the ball turned away after taking the edge but Jurel made it look easy.
Jurel to keep the sticks on Day 2: BCCI
“Rishabh Pant is still recovering from the hit on his left index finger. The BCCI medical team continues to monitor his progress. Dhruv Jurel will continue to keep wickets on Day 2,” read the official BCCI statement.
Ahead of the second day’s play, Pant was seen warming up with gloves and a bat, accompanied by batting coach Sitanshu Kotak. However, he appeared to be in some sort of discomfort, while Jurel simultaneously continued wicketkeeping drills, suggesting the team was prepared for the change.
