New Zealand’s star batter Kane Williamson has hailed Virat Kohli as the finest all-format cricketer the game has seen in the past 15 years.
Kohli, who debuted in 2008, has amassed an incredible 82 international centuries — comprising 30 in Tests, 51 in ODIs, and one in T20Is. A relentless run-machine, he retired from Tests and T20Is with impressive averages of 46.85 and 48.7 respectively. In ODIs, he continues to thrive, averaging a remarkable 57.88 with over 14,000 runs to his name.
“Virat is probably the greatest all-format player we’ve seen in the last 15 years,” Williamson told Sky Sports. “He’s faced enormous expectations in a cricket-mad country and has consistently performed at the very top. We’ve shared a great relationship in our own ways and stayed in touch over the years. It was never really a rivalry — more about competing hard for our teams.”
Williamson also reflected on his enduring friendship with Kohli, noting that their connection has evolved beyond the field. He said their shared experiences — from youth cricket to captaining their national sides — have allowed them to relate on a deeper level.
“It’s funny how things come full circle,” he said. “You’re not just playing cricket — you’re living life alongside one another in many ways. As you grow older, you connect over similar experiences, both on and off the pitch.”
The duo’s cricketing journey began in the U19 World Cup and has since blossomed into illustrious international careers. Both are widely respected as modern-day greats — not only for their performances but also for the grace and leadership they’ve brought to the game.
