Wolverhampton Wanderers have paid tribute to their former Portuguese forward, Diogo Jota, by inducting him into the club’s Hall of Fame. The honour comes after Jota, along with his brother Andre, tragically lost their lives in a horrific car crash in northwestern Spain on 3 July 2025.
Jota first joined Wolves in 2017 on a season-long loan from Atletico Madrid. In 2018, the move was made permanent for a reported fee of €14 million. At that time, Wolves were in the EFL Championship, and Jota played a key role in helping the club earn promotion to the Premier League.
He remained at Wolves until 2020, making a lasting impact before sealing a permanent move to Premier League giants Liverpool.
Speaking about his induction into Wolves’ Hall of Fame, the club’s director of football administration, Matt Wild, said: “Diogo was not only a phenomenal footballer, but someone who carried himself with humility and kindness throughout his time at Wolves, and will be sorely missed by all of us.”
Jota now joins the likes of Billy Wright, Derek Dougan, and Steve Bull in the club’s Hall of Fame.
Earlier this week, Liverpool also paid tribute to Jota by announcing the retirement of his squad number (20) in his honour and memory. This tribute will apply across all levels of the club, including LFC Women and the Academy.
The club made the decision after consulting with Jota’s wife, Rute, and his family. “By retiring this squad number, we are making it eternal – and therefore never to be forgotten. Diogo joined us in 2020, he won us number 20, and he wore – with honour, distinction and affection – the number 20. As far as Liverpool Football Club is concerned, he will be forever our number 20,” said Michael Edwards, FSG CEO of Football.
