New Zealand all-rounder Glenn Phillips has been ruled out of the ongoing tour to Zimbabwe due to a right groin injury sustained during the Major League Cricket (MLC) 2025 final.

Phillips was assessed upon arrival in Zimbabwe, and medical staff confirmed he would need several weeks to recover. As a result, Tim Robinson—who was initially named as cover and starred with a Player of the Match performance in the opening T20I—will remain with the squad for the remainder of the T20 Tri-Series, which also features South Africa.

According to a statement from New Zealand Cricket, Phillips will now return home along with Mitch Hay and Jimmy Neesham, who were also travelling as cover.

“It’s obviously disappointing to lose someone of Glenn’s calibre. Much like Finn, we really feel for Glenn and that he misses out on this series,” said New Zealand’s new head coach, Rob Walter. “We know he was eager to get out on the field for the Blackcaps and unfortunately, he won’t be able to do that for this series. We know he’ll work hard to get himself back onto the park, and I look forward to when that happens.”

Phillips has also been ruled out of the upcoming two-Test series. His replacement will be announced in due course.

The Kiwis remain unbeaten in the Tri-Series, having secured wins over both South Africa and Zimbabwe.
