In a major setback for Yorkshire County Cricket Club, Indian batter Ruturaj Gaikwad has withdrawn from his contract with the club, citing personal reasons.
Gaikwad was set to make his maiden appearance in county cricket, having signed on as an overseas player to feature in the remaining County Championship fixtures and the One-Day Cup. He was expected to link up with the squad ahead of their upcoming clash against reigning champions Surrey.
On Saturday, Yorkshire confirmed via a media release that Gaikwad would not be joining the team and stated that the personal reasons behind his withdrawal would remain confidential.
“Unfortunately Gaikwad’s not coming now for personal reasons,” head coach Anthony McGrath said. “We’re not going to have him for Scarborough or for the rest of the season. So that’s disappointing. I can’t tell you anything about the reasons why, but we hope that everything’s ok. We’ve literally just found out. We’re working behind the scenes on what we can do. But it’s only two or three days away, so I’m not sure what we can do at the moment. We’re working to try and get a possible replacement, but time pressure is the issue.”
Gaikwad was last seen in action during the IPL earlier this year, where he picked up an elbow injury while playing for Chennai Super Kings against Rajasthan Royals. The CSK captain remained with the squad for recovery and rehabilitation and was later named in the India A squad for the red-ball matches in England. However, he didn’t feature in either of the two games.
