After nearly three hours of frustrating rain delays, fans at Edgbaston were finally treated to some exciting action as the West Indies Champions and South Africa Champions played out a thrilling tie in a rain-curtailed encounter — the second match of the World Championship of Legends 2025.
AB de Villiers won the toss and opted to bowl first, aiming to take advantage of the damp conditions and chase the target later. With only 11 overs per side, the match was set up for big hits and quick runs.
Led by Chris Gayle, the West Indies Champions posted 79/5. Lendl Simmons (28 off 21) and Chadwick Walton (27* off 21) were the top scorers, while Dwayne Smith and Gayle failed to make a significant impact. South Africa’s bowlers kept things tight — Aaron Phangiso took two wickets, while Duanne Olivier, JJ Smuts, and Hardus Viljoen claimed one each.
In reply, the South Africa Champions came agonisingly close, finishing on 80/6. Jean-Paul Duminy played a superb knock of 25* off just 12 balls, with Sarel Erwee contributing 27 runs. However, with a DLS target of 81, South Africa fell one run short. Fidel Edwards and Sheldon Cottrell took two wickets apiece, while Sulieman Benn chipped in with one.
The match went down to the final ball, but South Africa fell just one run short. With this tie, South Africa have moved to second place on the points table with a net run rate of +0.091, while the West Indies have slipped to second-last with a net run rate of -0.091.
