Ahead of his farewell series, West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell named his match-winning cameo against India in the 2016 T20 World Cup semi-final as the highlight of his international career.

In a high-pressure encounter at the Wankhede Stadium, Russell came in at No. 5 with West Indies needing 77 from 41 balls in their chase of 193. The hard-hitting batter smashed an unbeaten 43 off just 20 deliveries, including the winning runs, to secure a spot in the final with two balls to spare. The Men in Maroon went on to beat England in a thrilling final in Kolkata and lift the T20 World Cup for the second time in four years.

“Definitely [my best moment was] the 2016 World Cup, that semi-final game against India where I brought the team home, me and Lendl Simmons, and obviously the start that we got from the other batters,” Russell said in a Cricket West Indies (CWI) interview. “Chasing 190-plus in that semi-final in India, with the crowd supporting India only, that was already a bit of pressure, but the wicket was a very good wicket, so the confidence that we had in the changing room and the batters that were left to come, it gave me the freedom and the confidence to go out and play the role that I did.”

Russell, who made his international debut in 2010, is set to retire after the upcoming five-match T20I series against Australia. Two of the matches will be played in Jamaica, with the second T20I marking Russell’s final international appearance — a fitting farewell in front of his home fans.
