As the fourth Test between India and England heads into a tense final day, questions are being raised about Shubman Gill’s leadership approach. While Virat Kohli was known for his aggressive captaincy—always looking to take five wickets in each session—Gill has taken a much calmer route, which hasn’t worked too well in this match.
India are still trailing by 137 runs, despite a solid unbeaten partnership between KL Rahul (87*) and Gill himself (78*), after losing two quick wickets in the very first over. However, it’s not just the bowlers’ form that’s a concern. Many believe Gill’s tactical decisions haven’t helped India’s cause either.
“Gill Needs Support from Senior Players,” Says Shastri
Former India head coach Ravi Shastri gave a clear message during a conversation on Sky Sports Cricket. Comparing Kohli and Gill, he said:
“I’ll give an example of Virat. He was the other way round as far as Gill [is concerned]. He was ultra-aggressive, where you had to, at times, calm him down from the dressing room. It was as if he wanted five wickets every session. That doesn’thappen. Sometimes, you’ve got to respect conditions and set fields accordingly.”
Shastri urged the senior players to step up and support Gill. With Rishabh Pant injured and off the field, he noted that Gill can’t do it all alone.
“That’s why team management becomes crucial. For Shubman Gill, it should be [the case] for his first year. The senior team members… they have to start being accountable, they have tohave their own ideas,” Shastri added.
