Former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper MS Dhoni has said that Ruturaj Gaikwad’s return to the side will resolve the team’s batting issues next season.

Gaikwad, who was the original captain of the CSK side, was ruled out of IPL 2025 after playing just five matches due to an elbow injury. Dhoni took over the captaincy once again but couldn’t influence the results significantly, as CSK managed to win only four matches in the entire tournament and finished at the bottom of the points table, struggling with their batting throughout the season.

“We were slightly worried about our batting order, but I think it’s quite sorted now. Rutu (Gaikwad) will be coming back. He got injured, but he will be returning. So, we are quite settled now,” said Dhoni at an event in Chennai.

Dhoni also mentioned that they will look to strengthen the team in the mini-auction ahead of the 2026 season.

“I wouldn’t say we slacked off, but there were certain gaps that needed to be filled. A small auction is coming up in December. There are a few loopholes, and we’ll try to address them,” Dhoni added.

Gaikwad has been out of competitive cricket since IPL 2025. The right-handed batter was due to play county cricket for Yorkshire but withdrew due to personal reasons. He has now been included in the West Zone squad for the upcoming Duleep Trophy 2025–26, which begins later this month.
