India pacer Akash Deep lauded the ‘commendable’ efforts of Mohammed Siraj, who was the stand-out pacer in the recently concluded England–India series, taking 23 wickets in five matches.

At a time when all-format players are managing their workload, Siraj displayed remarkable fitness, grit, and determination by playing all five games of the series. He bowled 1,113 deliveries across 185.3 overs. His wickets came at a slightly expensive average of 32.43, as the conditions favoured batters more in what was a high-scoring series.

“Playing continuously for five Test matches and putting in so much effort until the final game is truly commendable, and everyone has witnessed that,” said Akash Deep. “Such effort was bound to bring a positive result.”

As the senior paceman in the squad, Siraj consistently motivated the other pacers in the team, particularly when the opposition was on top.

“He wanted us to keep believing that we were going to do it. He gave us constant confidence that we would take wickets. In Test matches, sometimes confidence dips because we cannot apply T20 tactics, but Siraj always displayed a positive and confident body language, even during uncertain moments,” he added.

Without Mohammed Shami and with Jasprit Bumrah playing only three Tests, the Indian bowling attack fared well overall in England. It was a tough series for the bowlers. England’s pacers claimed 88 wickets at an average of 41.84, while India took 84 wickets at a better average of 38.38.
