Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has spoken about the growing speculation that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma might retire from ODIs after the upcoming series in Australia this October.
A report from Dainik Jagran claimed that the three-match series, starting on October 19, could be their final ODI appearance. This series will also mark the start of India’s preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa.
The report added that if Kohli and Rohit want to continue until the 2027 World Cup, they would need to play in the Vijay Hazare Trophy to stay match-ready, as per the BCCI’s domestic participation rule.
Both star batters retired from T20Is after India’s World Cup win in June 2024. They also stepped away from Test cricket in May 2025, just before the squad was announced for the England tour.
“Whoever does well will play” — Ganguly
Speaking during the AWL Agri Business Ltd event, Ganguly was asked about the possibility of the two stepping away from ODIs. He replied: “I’m not aware of this, can’t comment on this.”
He added that performance should be the only factor in deciding their future. “It’s difficult to say. Whoever does well will play. If they do well, they should continue. Kohli’s one-day record is phenomenal, even Rohit Sharma’s. Both of themare phenomenal in white-ball cricket,” Ganguly said.
The ODI tour of Australia will begin on October 19, with matches scheduled in Perth, Adelaide, and Sydney.
