In some good news for India, it is learnt that skipper Surya Kumar Yadav is perfectly on track to make it back for the Asia Cup. Surya, who is undergoing rehab, had already started batting and it is now a matter of time before he starts the final phase of his recovery. “He is taking it week by week,” a source close to developments said. “It is now time to start high intensity fielding drills and high-speed running. That’s will happen starting today.”

It is also to be seen where Surya bats for India at the Asia cup. Chances are he will want to hold the middle order together and bat at No. 4. It will allow him to control the middle overs, traditionally the problem time in a T20 game, and make sure that the scoring rate doesn’t drop. India has gun openers and if they fire, the powerplay is well and truly taken care of.

So far, Surya’s recovery is on song. He went into rehab with a fully structured plan and has gone about following and executing the plan to perfection. “It is looking good. There have been no issues thus far and things are on track,” said the source.

With the Asia Cup under a month away and team selection just about 10 days away, it is essential Surya gets back to full intensity training within the next seven days. He has been inspirational as leader and the way he dealt with Sanju Samson is a case in point. As a T20 batter, he has been stellar and India will need him in form to keep their white-ball record going. With the World Cup just a few months away, the Asia Cup will also be a rehearsal of sorts for India before going into the home tournament in February-March 2026.
