Amid rumours of a split between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Ravichandran Ashwin, the veteran all-rounder has clarified the situation, stating that he has only sought clarity from the franchise ahead of the auction, as nothing is currently in his control.

In recent weeks, much of the trade window chatter has centred around Ashwin and Sanju Samson. According to several reports, Samson is likely to join CSK, while Ashwin is expected to be released.

According to the latest report from ESPNcricinfo, Ashwin has informed the five-time IPL champions that he is open to moving on if he does not feature in their future plans.

“When I played for RR, after completing one year, the RR CEO emailed me a performance review… saying ‘We are so and so, we are expecting this, and we are renewing your contract next year.’ Every year, it was a 1+1+1 contract,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel. “So, every year when the contract ends, it is the responsibility of the franchise to inform the players whether they are being retained or released. In this situation, where there is speculation involving me and Sanju, there should obviously be a review of interest or non-interest. Every player wants clarity. In this case, nothing is in my hands; I have only asked for clarity. As a CSK player, the maximum cover is not coming from me.”

After a decade, the spin-bowling legend was bought by CSK for a whopping ₹9.75 crore at last year’s mega auction. However, he failed to meet expectations, which led to him being dropped from the playing XI. The off-spinner featured in nine of the 14 matches in the season, taking just seven wickets at an average of 40.42.

CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and MS Dhoni met with CSK officials in Chennai to discuss plans for next year’s IPL. Further clarity on Ashwin’s future is expected in the coming weeks.
