Tom Bruce has switched international allegiance from New Zealand and will now represent Scotland. The former New Zealand batter has been selected by Cricket Scotland for the ICC Men’s World Cup League 2 series in Canada.
Bruce became eligible to represent Scotland as his father was born in Edinburgh. The 34-year-old batter played 17 T20Is for New Zealand between 2017 and 2020. He has represented Central Districts since 2014 and most recently played in the Global Super League.
Bruce, who has also played county cricket for Sussex and Lancashire, was part of the Scotland development squad in 2016 before making his debut for New Zealand.
“I’ve been fortunate enough to play for New Zealand, and I want to continue showcasing my skills on the world stage – and help the Scotland team achieve success, as I know this group is capable of doing. I’m excited to keep growing with the team,” Bruce told Central Districts Cricket.
Cricket Scotland’s Head of Performance, Steve Snell, said:“He has had a very successful career in New Zealand cricket, but he is proud of his Scottish heritage. We’ve been in discussions with him for some time about committing to playing for Scotland. He’s excited to get involved and sees a huge level of opportunity for both himself and the team moving forward.”
Josh Davey, who last played for Scotland at the 2022 T20 World Cup, has also been recalled to the squad.
On Davey’s return, Snell added: “It’s excellent to have Josh Davey back, as he’s been unavailable to us for some time due to his county commitments. We’ve remained in constant dialogue with Josh during that period, and he has always expressed a desire to continue playing for Scotland.”
Scotland are currently third in the eight-team League 2 table, with 11 wins from 20 matches. The four-match series will be held in King City, near Toronto, from 29 August to 6 September.
