Former India player and coach, Ravi Shastri has picked Shubman Gill as the next big thing in Indian cricket. Speaking to Sky Sports Cricket, he heaped praise on the Test captain, who led India in the 2-2 series draw in England.
“No question, Shubman Gill. He’ll be around for a long, long time because we’ve seen what kind of series he’s had,” said the star commentator. “I think he’s only 25 years of age, and as you know, with this exposure, he’ll get even better,”
Shastri praised Gill’s batting technique and temperament. “He’s right up there. He’ll be up there. He’s composed. He’s very regal. The way he bats, he’s very easy on the eye, very fluent and has the ability to play the long innings,” he added.
Gill was given the responsibility of Test captaincy shortly before the England tour when Rohit Sharma retired. Many experts and fans criticised the decision because they doubted Gill’s batting abilities in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia) countries, where he averaged only 25.70 before this England tour.
Ahead of the first Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at Leeds, Gill said in a press conference that he wanted to be the best batter of the series. He kept his word and silenced his critics. In five Tests and 10 innings, he amassed 754 runs with four centuries and a highest score of 269. He was the highest scorer of the series. In SENA countries, Gill’s average has jumped to 42.26.
