The hero for India in the 2011 World Cup Yuvraj Singh has praised the captain Shubman Gill and his team for their incredible performance in England. Yuvraj also mentioned the performances of Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar with the bat lower down the order.
Yuvraj told ICC: “There were a lot of question marks over his overseas record. The guy became the captain and scored four Test hundreds. It’s just unbelievable that when you’re given responsibility, how you take it. So, very proud of them. I certainly feel it’s a win for us, although it’s a drawn series, because it’s a young team. And it’s not easy to go and play well in England and prove yourself,”
India went to England with three of their senior players being retired – Ravichandran Ashwin, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli. Many doubted the young team under new captain Gill, but India proved the critics wrong by drawing the series 2-2.
Gill gave a befitting reply to the experts who doubted his ability to bat in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia) countries. He became the highest run-scorer of the series, scoring 754 runs in five matches at an average of 75.40, raising his average in SENA countries from 25.70 to 42.26.
Jadeja and Sundar stuck to the crease and scored centuries on the final day of the fourth Test to take India to a draw.
“The moment in the tournament was when India drew the Test series. I’ve never seen, in a very long time, Washington and Jadeja got hundreds and drew a Test match. That speaks volumes. Obviously Jadeja has been there for a long time. But I think Washington Sundar, as a youngster coming into the team, I think it was incredible to do what he did,” Yuvraj added.
Jadeja finished as the fourth-highest run-getter of the series, scoring 516 runs in five matches. Sundar also played brilliantly throughout the series and scored 284 runs in four matches that included a century and a fifty.
