Left-arm fast bowler Kwena Maphaka has been added to South Africa’s squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia. The International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed the development in a media release issued on the eve of the series opener in Cairns.

Initially left out of the squad, Maphaka has earned a call-up on the back of an impressive performance in the three-match T20I series, which Australia won 2–1. In that series, Maphaka stood out as the leading wicket-taker, claiming nine wickets. The19-year-old pace sensation outshone seasoned campaigners such as Josh Hazlewood, Kagiso Rabada, and Adam Zampa.

Maphaka last featured in an ODI in December last year and may add to his two one-day caps in the upcoming series. With Marco Jansen unavailable, the series presents an opportunity for the Proteas to test Maphaka and Nandre Burger — the two left-arm pace options in the squad. Given his recent form, Maphaka is likely to get the nod.

Meanwhile, another standout performer from the T20I series, Dewald Brevis, who has been in sublime form this year, is set to make his ODI debut on Tuesday. The 22-year-old is expected to bat in the middle order.

After the first ODI in Cairns on Tuesday, both teams will travel to Mackay for the remaining two matches, scheduled for later this week on Friday, 22 August, and Sunday, 24 August.

Updated South Africa Squad: Temba Bavuma (c), Corbin Bosch, Matthew Breetzke, Dewald Brevis, Nandre Burger, Tony de Zorzi, Aiden Markram, Kwena Maphaka, Senuran Muthusamy, Keshav Maharaj, Wiaan Mulder, Lungi Ngidi, Lhuan-dre Pretorius, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs, Prenelan Subrayen
